Signs Of Abuse

It can be difficult to identify signs of abuse, and victims are often unable or afraid to report abuse. Here are some indications that abuse might be taking place.

Physical Abuse

  • Bruises on the neck, inner arms, wrists or thighs; old and new bruises that are extremely close to one another; bruises that appear to be caused by restraints
  • Scratches, scabs and burns
  • Cracked or dry lips, excessive drowsiness, drooling, and staring off into space can all be signs of improper or over-medication
  • Restraints left on beds or wheelchairs
  • Sudden, unexpected coma or death

Neglect

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Poor hygiene
  • Dirty or uncut fingernails
  • Knotted hair
  • Dirty or stained clothing
  • Bedsores (often located on the back, buttocks, elbows and/or heels)
  • Shortage of nursing home staff

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is often manifested as:

  • Fear and/or anxiousness
  • Depression
  • Withdrawal
  • Anger
  • Extreme agitation
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • An unwillingness to discuss life at the nursing home or how one is being cared for

Sexual Abuse

  • Genital bleeding or pain
  • Bruises on inner thighs
  • Sudden difficulty walking or sitting
  • Torn or bloody underclothing
  • A sexually transmitted disease

If someone you love is showing signs of potential abuse such as these, the first thing you need to do is ask questions. Don’t just ask your loved one, ask nursing home staff as well. If either party seems unwilling to discuss the matter, or the explanations you are getting seem unlikely at best, contact Florida nursing home abuse lawyer David Benenfeld immediately for assistance. Our firm is here to help put an end to the abuse, hold those responsible accountable, and obtain compensation for any physical or emotional harm done to your loved one.
